JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Jasper County Judge Mark Allen has issued a voluntary evacuation for residents living on the low lying areas near the Angelina and Neches Rivers in Jasper.

The evacuation was declared Friday at 5 PM.

According to Allen, the Army Corp of Engineers will release water from Lake Sam Rayburn Saturday afternoon because the water is too high and reaching emergency flood levels.

Texas Task Force One, The National Guard, and Texas Parks and Wildlife will be going door-to-door to residences along the rivers to help assist evacuating people from their homes.

Red Cross has set up a shelter at the Lighthouse Ministries in Jasper that will house those evacuated out of their homes.

“This is mandatory and we're not going to force people out of their homes, but we are urging that they consider it,” Judge Allen said. “We'd hate for them to get trapped when the lake water is released. This is all about preservation of life.”
