Angelina College Board of Trustees names new president

LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - At a special called meeting this afternoon, the Board of Trustees named Dr. Michael Simon as the new president of Angelina College. Dr. Simon is currently president of Dawson Community College in Montana and previously was campus CEO of the Timberline Campus of Colorado Mountain College. He will assume his new role the first week in August.

"I am so excited to join the Angelina College family and to serve the communities in the college's region,” Simon said. “I am deeply thankful to the Trustees and to the faculty and staff who participated in the search process. The warmth and hospitality of everyone involved was absolutely wonderful."

In addition, the Board praised the search consultant, the screening committee, and the campus community for their work and participation in the selection process. President of the Board Tim Stacy issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are very pleased with our selection of Dr. Michael Simon to become only the third president of Angelina College in its 47-year history. Selecting the college president is by far the most important activity required of the Board. From the outset, we wanted to make sure there was plenty of community involvement so we formed a Presidential Screening Committee made up of seven representatives from the college and seven representatives from the community at large. This 14 person committee spent countless hours reviewing well over 40 resumes. They narrowed our selection to five outstanding candidates and we had each one visit the campus, speak to the College leaders, answer questions at a public forum and conduct an interview with the Board. After receiving input from the Screening Committee and comments from the public forums coupled with our own assessments from the interviews, I feel we selected the very best candidate in Michael Simon to carry Angelina College into the future. He has outstanding credentials and references coming from a variety of sources. I believe we will all find his warm nature and good sense of humor to be welcomed here in Angelina County and beyond.”

Dr. Simon has 21 years of experience in higher education. He began his career in 1994 at Northern Michigan University, where he served in positions relating to housing and career services. From 2000 until 2008, he worked at Saginaw Valley State University and became the Assistant Vice President of Student Services and Enrollment Management. He moved to Colorado to become the CEO of the Timberline campus of Colorado Mountain College in 2008, and he became the president of Dawson College in 2013.

"He's not planning on making major changes right at the beginning. I think you'll find he's a great listener, and he really just wants to move the college forward. He has a lot of wisdom, and we're looking forward to what he has to offer," Stacy said.

Simon earned his Doctor of Education in Higher Education degree from Texas Tech University, his Master of Arts in Administration Services/Public Administration from Northern Michigan University and his Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree from Central Michigan University.

Simon will replace Dr. Larry Phillips, who is retiring this summer following 50 years of service to Texas public education, the last 24 of which have been as just the second president of AC in the college's 47-year history.
