LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Two Lufkin Council members are calling a life-saving series of events, "a God thing."
Councilwoman Sarah Murray is thanking councilman Robert Shankle for saving her life. She says the two just so happened to be having lunch Wednesday when she started to choke on her salad.
Shankle darted across the room and performed a heimlich maneuver that they had both learned together during the Citizen's Fire Academy. The two have served multiple terms together and say they have a great friendship, but she never would have imagined an incident like this.
"Robert took it seriously and it worked just like that. How do you say thank you to someone who saved your life?" asked Murray.
"Just like you just did!" Shankle joked. They both followed with, "It's a God thing."
Murray said you could hear her airway clear as Shankle saved her life. Her friend had tried to perform the heimlich maneuver first, but was unsuccessful.
Murray said there were two Eagle Scouts in the area while she was choking. They told her they didn't know what to do. She says she's grateful that her colleague paid attention during the citizen's fire academy.
