Ash Wednesday

Wednesday many Christians are celebrating the first day of Lent. It is Ash Wednesday.

Some worshippers chose noon services to observe the Holy Day.

Those at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches were told to let the ash cross symbolize the death of their selfishness. The cross also symbolizes penance.

They're encouraged to be sensitive to others's needs and give up something of personal importance.

Lent ends on Easter Sunday. It goes for 40 days, excluding Sundays. Practicing Christians use this time to remind themselves of the sacrifice made by Jesus.
