LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - It's a heated debate over the sale of dogs that has had some members of the deep east Texas community divided for quite some time, but one resident is taking a stand.
Matt Davis runs the "Deep East Texas Classifieds" Facebook page. It's there where he posted this message…"Not going to make a lot of friends with this, but as of 5/27/15 there will be no animals posted to this group for sale or for free."
It's a move Davis feels was necessary to put a stop to what he considers inhumane treatment.
"We've noticed a growing trend on a lot of the Facebook groups where people are selling desirable breeds for extremely high prices…people are turning into almost a full-time job", Matt Davis, Deep East Texas Classifieds, said.
Davis said not only is the thought of a puppy mill frustrating, it's the laws they don't abide by that bother him even more.
"They don't pay sales tax to the city of Lufkin so it's a very large problem and it puts a burden on the city", Davis said.
The feedback received since Davis posted the message has been positive; something he said is a true surprise for someone simply trying to do the right thing.
"I'm trying to do my part for what I feel is right, to stop it in whatever way I can…I can't make the city ban the sale of animals, but I can at least not promote it on my groups", Davis said.
Davis said he only hopes his actions will have a positive impact on the community.
