NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - Stephen F. Austin pole vaulter Demi Payne is this year's NCAA Outdoor Pole Vaulting Champion.
On Thursday, Payne jumped in the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon. As expected, it ended up being a battle between Payne and Arkansas' Sandi Morris. The collegiate record has been a tug of war game between the two.
Payne cleared the bar at 15-5 while Morris did not and passed on the bar. Payne made two attempts to clear 15-7 and go for the collegiate record that Morris currently holds, but missed both attempts. Morris did not clear 15-7 either and that gave Payne this year's crown.
By clearing 15-5, Payne now holds the NCAA Championship meet record. 15-5 is a half inch shorter than Payne's personal best.
The senior is bringing SFA it's first Division I Championship in any sport by winning the 2015 Outdoor NCAA Championship.
