ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin family is looking for answers after severe East Texas weather has left them trapped. The family says their street collapsed at the beginning of May, and with more rain on its way, the hole blocking them could only get worse.
Mr. Luna doesn't know what his next step will be but until he finds it, he crosses this bridge one step at a time.
"It happened during the rain at the beginning of May, and it got bigger after two weeks or so," said Isabel Luna, one resident's daughter.
She speaks on his behalf and explains how the massive hole has separated her family from the main roads, grocery stores, and work for over a month.
"That's the only way they can get through," Luna said.
Three families live far behind this makeshift bridge. They must walk about half of a mile to get to it.
"My Dad is 62 and my mom is 59-years-old," Luna said.
They catch rides from family members when they need to go somewhere.
"My sister and brother have their vehicles on the other side of the road, and that's how they get around," Luna said.
The Luna family's biggest concern is their kids.
"One is about 8 months old and the other is about 10 months old," Luna said.
One wrong step could lead to tragic results. The Luna's say they don't know what to do next, as the commissioners say the families must deal with the issue themselves.
"They couldn't do anything about it. It was a private road," Luna said.
The repairs to close the gap that has caused so much inconvenience are costly.
"They estimate about $8,500 and the other one said $6,000," Luna said.
"My parents are on a fixed budget and they can't afford to get the road fixed,"Luna said.
The family says the road has been falling in more and more over time. With more rain on the way, the number of steps they must take over this dangerous walkway might increase
