Former SFA Lumberjack invited to try out for Dallas Cowboys

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Gilmer native and former SFA running back Gus Johnson has been invited to a tryout with the Dallas Cowboys.

According to writer Brandon George with the Dallas Morning News, the tryout will be during their mandatory three day mini-camp.

Johnson signed with the Oakland Raiders following the conclusion of the 2015 NFL Draft as a priority free agent but in mid May, the former Lumberjack was cut by the team following their rookie mini-camp. Johnson was one of six players waived by the Raiders.

In his four years Johnson's honors include a three-time All-Southland Conference selection, Southland Conference Player of the Year in 2014, 2014 AFCA, FCS Sports Network and Beyond Sport Network first team All-American and he was named to the 2014 Associated Press second team All-American. Johnson is SFA's all-time leading rusher with 3,907 yards and ranking fifth all-time in SLC history. Johnson also ranks first all-time in program history in season rushing yards; 1,683 in 2014, season rushing touchdowns ;23 in 2014, season scoring; 138 points in 2014, career rushing touchdowns; 51 and career total touchdowns; 52. Johnson ranks second in SFA history in career scoring with 312 points and single game rushing yards with 252, third in season all-purpose yards with 1,848 in 2014 and fifth in career all-purpose yards with 4,326.
