Confiscated Trailer May Lead To Clues

by Donna McCollum

An 18 wheeler that was carrying more than two million dollars in suspected drug money through Nacogdoches went under a close inspection.

Investigators found four motorcycle batteries inside the wall where the money was hidden. It's suspected those batteries might power an automatic access to the 'money storage' area.

Investigators are looking high and low on the trailer, but so far haven't found a secret passage. Next week specialists from Austin will take a closer look.

Narcotic agents say it's important to learn about sophisticated hauling designs used by drug runners. They come out with something new all the time. "It's difficult staying one step ahead, but we try," said the trooper who made the confiscation. His name is not being released because of the nature of the case. Retaliation is a concern.

The money was found when the truck's driver was stopped by a DPS trooper on highway 59. The driver remains in jail. He's facing state and federal charges.
