CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) -

The rain left the East Texas area just in time for the annual Houston County 4H Skeet Shoot.

The event featured students from all over the East Texas area. The event was one of many used across the state to qualify students for the state shoot in San Antonio at the National Shooting Complex on July 13-18. The event features students from age 8-18. Gun safety was on the minds of all at the event after the recent shooting tragedy in South Carolina that left nine dead in a church.

Instructors with the event feel gun safety is some thing overlooked.

"We firmly believe if you teach a child how to safely operate and handle a firearm, you are less likely to have an accident in the future," Houston County 4H instructor G.P. Shearer said. "The students out here are safer with a gun then most 40 year-old men that have them at home."

Students in the 4H program are taught safety from Day one and each competition has a safety meeting before the students take to the range. The students that compete also value the safety aspect.

"Once you go through this it really makes you think about those things," student Paige Shearer said. "It is very important to know these things."

The senior students find it important to build relationships with the younger students by teaching them the safety measures needed when handling a firearm.

"Growing up they learn to be safe with a gun and not to be scared of one," student Rowdy Furrh said. "We feel like that is kind of a big thing now. People don't know how to handle a gun."

When the topic of gun regulation came up, instructors and students both agreed the main concern is of uneducated gun owners.

"I think there is a misconception, because they don't have proper knowledge of them," student Earren Heady said. "A gun is not a weapon. A gun is a firearm."

"In its design, it does what it is supposed to do," G.P. Shearer said. "It's the person behind that gun that initiates that shot."

The shooting competition will continue on Saturday June 20 starting at 8 am at the 4H Shooting complex off of Highway 287 south of Crockett.
