LUFKIN, TX (News Release) - Motorists will see more major changes in the landscape at the US 59 North/Loop 287 construction project beginning next week.
Webber LLC, contractors for the project, will close what is historically known as the "cloverleaf" intersection by mid-week, weather permitting. Once the rounded US 59 entry/exit is closed, contractors will begin tearing it out and start the process of building a new ramp.
Plans also include reopening the US 59/Spence Street intersection north of Loop 287 on US 59, as construction there is scheduled to be completed early next week. The reopening of Spence Street will coincide with the cloverleaf intersection closure, making it possible for motorists to exit onto Spence from US 59 North.
Motorists can also expect the Business 59 northbound entry ramp to Loop 287 East to be closed by the following week in order to begin work on a new ramp at that intersection. Motorists wanting to access Loop 287 or US 69 North will be able to do so at the westbound frontage road intersection.
As this $52 million project moves toward completion by early 2016, motorists are reminded to slow their speed to the posted 45 miles per hour throughout the construction zone. Once complete, the US 59 North/Loop 287 intersection will be a smooth transition for drivers wanting to access US 59 or Loop 287 from any direction.
Drivers should remain alert as these and other changes occur. Follow all traffic safety laws and be prepared to stop or be directed by lighted message boards. Remember, traffic fines double when workers are present.
