NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Now that marriage is an option to same-sex couples across the country, the wedding industry has access to a new market of customers. East Texas News spoke to many wedding industry businesses across East Texas over the last few days: Planners, florists, and caterers. But many were hesitant to speak to us about this topic.
For Alex Shaw, the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage means a chance for increased business as well as an opportunity to be a part of a special day, many thought they would never see. It's giving a new meaning to the term new normal.
"I'm really excited for this. This will bring new business. Couples who never thought this would ever happen, you know, they're really excited about it and I'm excited for them [and] to give them this opportunity," said photographer Alex Shaw.
Shaw's been in business for nearly four years and while, for better or for worse our nation has been changed, Shaw says the services she offers will remain the same.
"Same services; I would never decline anybody for, you know, same-sex weddings or their religion or anything like that. I'm not that kind of person," Shaw said.
In a time where many seem divided over the issue, Shaw's using the experience and her business as a means to spread equality.
"Everybody wants to be treated equally and have the same right as everybody else so if I'm able to do for a couple, I'm really excited for that," Shaw said.
