LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

On the last day of June the Angelina County community held a vibrant send-off for recently-retired Lufkin/Angelina Chamber of Commerce president Jerry Huffman. Well-wishers packed the Crown Colony Country Club ballroom Tuesday evening for his Retirement Reception.

Huffman and his wife Debra arrived in Lufkin in 1974, for what he thought would be for 5 years that turned into 40 years.

He says he'll always remember how community giving brought to life many things like the Exposition Center, Ellen Trout Zoo, and the Temple Theatre to name a few."The philanthropic spirit of this community has made all those things happen,” Jerry Huffman shared.  “And that's the same spirit that exists in all our non-profits, including the Chamber. Great volunteers. Great Leadership. It's just been an awesome experience."

This reception comes one month after entered into retirement on May 31st. However, he's not fully out of the Chamber of Commerce offices. While the search continues for the next President, Huffman is filling in until a successor is chosen.

His retirement will still keep him busy. He says he plans to do consulting with non-profits.
