Baseball Legend Speaks To Historical Commission

The Angelina County Historical Commission had a historic guest speaker at Monday's meeting.

Ruben "Jelly" Samuel talked about his days as a star athlete.  Samuel played baseball in the 1940s.  Some of his fondest memories came from his days as a Diboll Dragon.  The Dragons were just one of several sawmill teams.  Samuel told the crowd how much he misses his days at bat.

Samuel says, "Ooh wee, [those were] the good old days.  [It] wasn't much money but we had plenty fun, every time."

Samuel played left field.  He says back in the 40s, how good you were was based on how many home runs you hit instead of your batting average.
