County Needs Room For Records

Angelina County is trying to figure out what to do with hundreds of old records dating back to the 1800s.

Members of the Angelina County Historical Commission spent part of Monday talking about finding space for tons of paperwork now being stored in the old jail.  Those records were moved to the jail about a year ago from another storage facility.  Right now, the commission is trying to identify those records and figure out how to preserve them.

Jonathan Gerland says, "County records are the most basic record of historical existence.  Things such as birth records, death records, marriage records; human existence is recorded at the county level."

Finding more space for historical documents printed over the years is a common dilemma many counties face.  Angelina County's paperwork dates all the way back to 1846 when the county was founded.
