HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens responded to a multi-victim drowning at a lake in Houston County Sunday evening.
Chief Deputy of the Houston County Sheriff's Office G.P. Shearer told KTRE that the family members rented a canoe at the Houston County Lake near Grapeland and were due to return at 4 p.m. but never showed.
Game Warden Zakary Benge says there are four victims: Two adult males, an adult female, and a child between 6-7 years old. Benge says it appears the canoe they rented may have capsized, or took on water. Authorities found the canoe submerged near one of the victims.
Three of the four victims' bodies have been recovered, but one adult male has still not been found.
"I don't think it was high wind today, but in a canoe, it doesn't take much to flip it because it's already unstable, especially with that many people in it," Benge said.
The family of the victims were nearby for a family gathering and have remained in the area. The identities are not yet being released.
Game wardens will continue searching for the missing body Monday morning.
