HOUSTON COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Houston County Sheriff Darrel Bobbitt is asking for the public's help with any information in connection to a body found in a shallow grave in a wooded area in the county.
According to a press release, responded to an area off of County Road 1737 after a Grapeland police report of a missing person. At 7 a.m., cadaver dogs found a body in a shallow grave in a wooded area.
According to the report, a portion of the body was protruding from the ground.
Texas Rangers were called in to assist with processing the scene and to exhume the body.
The body will be delivered to the medical examiner's office for identification and to determine the cause of death.
Bobbitt is asking that anyone with information on the incident to call the sheriff's office.
Grapeland Police Chief Chuck Franklin confirmed his office had been investigating the disappearance of Vanessa Melson since June 17.
According to a Facebook page dedicated to Melson, she is a 29-year-old woman who was last seen leaving a home on College Street in Grapeland with a man. She is a mother of three.
Houston County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy G.P. Shearer said they have been able to "pretty much" confirm the body was Melson, but they will wait on official confirmation through the medical examiner's office.
