Authorities Search 125 Acres for Stolen Items

by Jessica Cervantez

Eight 4-wheelers are getting ready to search more than 125 acres of wooded area. Another search crew is flying up above, looking for items, possibly stolen by Rocky and Sheila Self.

The couple was arraigned, charged by the state with aggravated robbery. Federal charges have also been filed.

Police were led to the couple after 18-year-old Christian Wilson was caught and confessed to robbing banks in Lufkin and Etoile. Wilson told police the Selfs were also involved in those robberies. He then led authorities to the Self property, where they found an enormous amount of stolen items. Now, they're searching property across the street.

Nacogdoches County Sheriff Thomas Kerss said, "We have talked to witnesses in the area that have seen a lot of activity from the Selfs from the last two weeks in that general vicinity."

While investigators sort through stolen items already recovered, the search continues for more. It's believed the Selfs may have been stealing vehicles, trailers, equipment, and tools for many years. Some of the stolen merchandise, was reported missing as far back as 1995.

Sheriff Kerss said, "Most people don't go out and steal one time and stop. To have this much activity and for it to go on as long as it has is somewhat unusual."

Authorities aren't sure what they will find next. But one thing is certain, they still have a big job ahead of them.

The Selfs will stay in the Nacogdoches County jail until they have to be transported back to Tyler for their federal arraignment proceedings. More charges against them are expected as the investigation continues.
