State authorities captured wanted sex offender with Polk Co. tie

AUSTIN, TX (KTRE) - State authorities have captured a man with Polk County ties who was recently added to the Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offenders list.

According to a press release from the Texas Department of Public Safety, agents with Texas Attorney General's Fugitive Apprehension Unit arrested Michael Dwayne Cox, at a Houston home without incident Monday.

The arrest was the result of a tip received through Texas Crime Stoppers, and a reward of up to $3,000 will be paid, the press release stated.

Cox was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child after an incident in Dallas County involving a 9-year-old female. He was sentenced to 10 years in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison.

Then in 2004, Cox was convicted in Harris County for possession of a controlled substance.

On September 24, 2013, the Polk County Sheriff's Office issued a warrant for Cox's arrest for failure to register as a sex offender.

Texas Crime Stoppers, which is funded by the Governor's Criminal Justice Division, offers cash rewards to any person who provides information that leads to the arrest of one of the Texas 10 Most Wanted fugitives or sex offenders.

To be eligible for the cash rewards, there are five different ways to provide anonymous tips:

Call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-252-TIPS (8477).

Text the letters DPS - followed by your tip - to 274637 (CRIMES) from your cell phone.

Submit a web tip through the DPS website by selecting the fugitive you have information about, and then clicking on the link under their picture.

Submit a Facebook tip at by clicking the "SUBMIT A TIP" link (under the "About" section).

Submit a tip through the DPS Mobile App.

All tips are anonymous - regardless of how they are submitted.
