Kennedy was 84 when she died Saturday.
Kennedy was well-respected among all of Lufkin. Throughout her life, she ministered to the whole community and provided food to the poor. She founded the annual Thanksgiving food drive more than 30 years ago and it now feeds 1,500 families a year.
"She was always out on the street, feeding the homeless, talking to the drug addicts," said Lufkin City Councilman Robert Shankle. "You know, if she saw a young lady on the corner, she would ask her if she was hungry. She would always ask if there was anything she could do to help."
Kennedy would take on personas of different black women in history and demonstrate in front of groups. She was also a teacher, writer, and poet.
In the 2000s, Kennedy won several awards recognizing her service.
