Cigarette Tax Maybe Going Up In Smoke

by Jessica Cervantez

Texas lawmakers are once again considering a plan to increase the tax on cigarettes. If it passes the latest plan would mean an extra one dollar tax per pack.

Some lawmakers see the extra tax money as a way to help the state budget.

But, opponents say the increase would cause a black market on cigarettes. It would cause people to go out of state to buy cigarettes and selling them back in Texas for a profit.

Currently, the cigarette tax in Texas is $.41 per pack.
