Superintendent's Contract Not Extended

by Donna McCollum

School board members in Nacogdoches have decided not to renew several contracts. Among those not being renewed is Superintendent Dr. Tony Riehl.

Four other top district leaders got the same news. They are Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Dr. Ray Glynn, Business Manager Charles Langlotz , Director of Special Education Debbie Walker and Director of Career and Technology Donna Brown.

Riehl told us 'no comment' when asked about the board's decision Thursday night not to extend his two year contract by another year.

The news came after a lengthy executive session. The board was split on the decision about Dr. Riehl's contract by a 4-3 vote. Board members Duncan Rogde, Almarie Henderson and Rex Humphreys voted against the motion. In favor of the move not to extend Reihl's contract were Jay Knott, Phil Mahar, Tom Davis and Board President Richard Fischer.

"I think the board is willing to buy out Dr. Riehl to some degree, but not pay him every cent in benefits and salary that he would get would he to serve out his contract,"said Fischer.

Fischer added a full 'buy out' could cost an extra $600,000 to $1-million. The district can't afford this. Fischer also said the two parties are far from a compromise. "Negotiations occurred briefly, but we were so far apart in our negotiation positions that we realized quite quickly that we were wasting our time to negotiate."

Fischer tells us a contract 'non-extension' is not a termination. The contract can still be renewed in the future.

Next month the administration and board will attend a state ordered 'team building' workshop.
