CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) - Firefighters in Houston County have remained busy, despite Houston County Judge Erin Ford declaring a burn ban for the area on July 30.
According to Crockett Fire Chief John Angerstein, the department has been called out to eight wildfires this week.
"In the month before the ban, we were called to zero," Angerstein said. As you can see it is a serious issue out there for us and the other departments in the county."
Over the weekend, Crockett assisted other departments in the Lovelady area when a person welding had a spark ignite a small fire that would eventually engulf a whole tree.
"Just be aware of your surroundings," Angerstein said. "Workers welding, mowing equipment; anything that causes a spark could start a wildfire with the dry weather and low moisture content."
Angerstein said his trucks are remaining loaded and ready to roll with the conditions they are seeing.
