POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Texas Department of Public Safety trooper arrested a 54-year-old Livingston woman for allegedly driving drunk with three children under the age of 15 in the car on Wednesday after someone reported that she was driving recklessly on FM 3126.
Carnella Hughes was booked into the Polk County jail on a state-jail felony driving while intoxicated with a child under the age of 15 in the car. She has since been released from the jail. No bail amount information was available as of 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
According to a press release, a Polk County DPS trooper responded to a report of a reckless driver on FM 3126 near FM 1988 at about 7 p.n. on Wednesday. Initial reports stated that the driver of a silver Chevrolet car had narrowly missed hitting another motorist on the highway.
The DPS trooper located the Chevrolet on FM 1188 and made a traffic stop on it near Thomas Supply. When the trooper made contact with Hughes, she allegedly admitted to drinking alcohol before driving that night.
The trooper started giving the standard field sobriety tests to Hughes, but had to stop for her safety, the press release stated.
Hughes was arrested at the scene and charged with DWI with a child under the age of 15 because she had three young children in the car with her. Two of the children were 10-year-old girls and one was a 7-month-old baby girl.
Hughes was taken to the Polk County Jail, where she provided a breath specimen that she was above the legal limit, the press release stated.
The three children were released into the custody of a family member.
