Angelina County Sheriff's Office consistently training to combat cyber predators

ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Jared Fogle is a name several people know due his celebrity status as the former Subway spokesperson. Robert Faulkner, a 21-year-old Lufkin man, is a name only a few know. Despite differences, they do have one thing in common, they both solicited sex from minors over the internet.

"There's not really a stereotype of a predator," said Captain Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office. "A predator could be anybody, right? It doesn't discriminate as far as social class or financial class."

With the increase in technology and emergence of social media, it's easier for these predators to get in contact with children.

"They have more tools now because the same things that help us do our daily task also helps criminals," Lenderman explained.

After the sheriff's office conducted a sting operation that led to the arrest of Faulkner, who continues to remain in jail, they have increased their training when it comes to combating online predators.

"Technology is advancing so fast and if we don't keep up with it, we'll be lost," Lenderman said. "A lot of these seminars and things we go to try to keep us up to speed. They make us aware of all the new sites that are continuously coming up that we need to watch out for."

Along with special training from experts on everything from how to detect an online predator to how to conduct a sting operation to take one in, the sheriff's office has also teamed up with the community, to teach parents and concerned citizens internet safety. They said when it comes to the children of Angelina County, one can never be too careful

"There are people out there that want to do ugly stuff, don't ever think they're not, so you've always got to have your guard up," Lenderman said. "Don't take anything for granted."
