It was a packed Lufkin Civic Center Friday morning full of the Lufkin ISD staff to kick off their back-to-school convocation ceremony, but it was also a great day for the Lufkin state championship soccer team.
The filled room gave a standing ovation to the team for their efforts in making school history, and the squad also received their state rings.
These boys certainly worked hard to win the 2015 state title and reaped the reward of their hard work to pay for the rings, raising $36,000 by working for the school, fundraising and receiving donations.
Lufkin Jewelry on the Square took on the project making the 10 karat gold rings. They have 26 jewels on the inside to mark their 26 wins. Then 16 jewels outline the outside of the ring to represent their 16-5A district, which they also won.
On one side of the ring it has the state of Texas with a purple star for Lufkin and their names. On the other side it has the Lufkin Panther with their 26-2-1 record.
The inside of the ring reads their team motto which is “Toughness, Togetherness, Team.” They’re all traits the 2015 team exhibited throughout the season, and in the state title game when they beat Georgetown East 3-1.
