ZAVALLA, TX (KTRE) -

One person is dead following a shooting in Zavalla Friday night.

Police responded to a family disturbance on George Street around 8:30 p.m. When officers arrived to the scene, they found Benny Dale Elliot, 65, of Zavalla fatally shot. Zavalla Police Chief Steve Drumm says Elliot was allegedly shot and killed by his wife, 67-year-old Alice Elliott.

The Elliott's neighbors were shocked by what happened.

"They both stuck to themselves, I mean they both lived in their own little world," said neighbor Dan Ronan. "They were both good people, I've known them for nine years, I just didn't understand."

According to police, the the couple had been in an apparent fight before the shooting. There were no illegal drugs involved in the incident.

Police said Alice told investigators this wasn't the first time she has been physically harmed by her husband.

"From an investigation that we conducted so far, preliminary findings have shown that there had been disturbance and family violence in the past," Drumm explained.

Despite what happened inside the home, neighbors are saddened by the incident.

"I can't believe it, it's shocked us all," Ronan said.

Judge Puckett has ordered an autopsy.

The investigation is ongoing and as of Sunday no arrests have been made.
