LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Officials with the Deep East Texas Council of Governments said Thursday that they expect the funding for DETCOG's proposed new facility on State Highway 103 should be finalized by the end of September.
Walter Diggles' DETCOG's executive director, said the new building will be located in the business park on Highway 103. The $1 million in requested funding will come from the US Economic Development Administration.
The funding should be finalized by the end of September, when the new budget year starts in Washington, D.C, Diggles said.
In addition to housing various DETCOG sub-offices, the facility will also serve as a disaster response center during disasters like hurricanes and tornadoes.
Bob Bashaw, DETCOG's regional planner, said the money is left over from Hurricane Katrina disaster relief funds. He explained that the building will be used by DETCOG personnel during evacuations.
Bashaw said there is no timetable on when the new facility will be completed.
