Two killed, including 1-year-old, in fatal wreck near Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Two people were killed, including a 1-year-old, after a two-vehicle wreck near Nacogdoches Friday night.

The fatal wreck occurred on Hwy 59 North near Old Lufkin Road and south of Nacogdoches. Troopers say 1-year-old Blaze Zambo and 23-year-old Laura Saldans were killed after a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Michael Zambo, of Lufkin, struck the back of a semi-trailer.

Saldans was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kerry Williamson. Michael Zambo, Blaze, and two other passengers, 6-year-old Lira Richard and 6-year-old Aubree Salda, were transported to Memorial Hospital in Nacogdoches, where Blaze was pronounced deceased.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates northbound traffic on Hwy 59 was moving slowly due to a previous crash being cleared, when Michael Zambo's 2012 Chevrolet Traverse approached the slow-moving traffic and struck the towed unit of a 2005 Volvo truck tractor-semi trailer from behind.

The driver of the truck tractor was identified as 54-year-old Rafael Hernandez, of Covina, California, and was not reported as being injured during the crash.

The wreck remains under investigation.
