LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A 23-year-old Pollok man accepted a plea bargain deal of six months for having a sexual relationship with a runaway 15-year-old girl from Waco and getting caught at a Diboll motel in November 2014.
Michael Chad Albert appeared in Judge Bob Inselmann's 217th Judicial District Court on Tuesday morning. As part of the plea deal, Albert, who pleaded guilty to a second-degree sexual assault of a child charge, will be required to register as a sex offender. In addition, he is banned from having any kind of contact with the victim or her family in person, by phone, by social media, or by letter.
Lt. Pete Maskunas with the Angelina County Sheriff's Office said the then-15-year-old girl's parents connected their daughter to Angelina County and were in town all day on Nov. 4, 2014 working with Texas Rangers and detectives with the sheriff's office.
"Information we had combined with information they had led to a little more clear picture of what we are dealing with," Maskunas said.
Authorities were able to track the couple down in a Diboll motel, and Maskunas said Albert confessed to the crime.
Maskunas said online solicitation crimes like this have become a common occurrence.
"A lot of these kids don't have a whole lot of social interaction or personal interaction with their own peer group, so they go online looking for friendships and typically run into things like this," Maskunas said.
Maskunas said as a parent he is always on alert with his children and he hopes others can learn from his example.
"At any point in time I will walk in and pick their phone up," Maskunas said. "I know their password. If I don't know their password, I will make them tell me their password. I'll review their stuff and review what they are saying and watch. We keep close track of it."
