Crockett police have arrested a man accused of trying to set fire to a home after he said his mother needed to die.

Police arrested Raymond Smith Jr., 34, of Crockett, on a charge of first-degree arson on Monday.

According to a police report, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Sowescor Street on Monday to respond to a fire, which was out by the time they arrived.

They spoke with a woman, who said Smith set a fire to one of the bedrooms and left. There were two other people in the home when he left.

The woman said she had been arguing with Smith, who said his mother needed to die.

Police were able to catch up to Smith on George Briggs Street and arrest him.
