Open Tailgate Causes Deadly Accident

by Chris Cato

An open tailgate is to blame for a fatal accident in Angelina County Friday night.

DPS officials say around 6:30 PM, 45 year old Jean McCarty of Lufkin was driving south on highway 69 just outside the Lufkin city limits when what appears to be a wooden chair fell out of the back of her pickup. The driver behind her, 55 year old Mary Mays of Huntington, swerved off the road to miss the debris.

Mays overcorrected to get back on the road, sending her truck rolling several times.

Officials say she was taken to Lufkin's Memorial Hospital but died about an hour later.

McCarty stopped when the accident happened but then left. She was later found to be intoxicated on what officers believe to be some sort of pills. She has been cited for having an unsecured load and a DWI.
