POLK COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the Goodrich man who was arrested last week on four felony sexual assault charges and a felony endangering a child charge was an officer with the Sweeney Independent School District Police Department as of Monday.
Mark Shawn Hamilton, 51, is still being held in the Polk County Jail on four felony sexual assault charges and one felony endangering a child charge. Collectively, his bail has been set at $1 million.
During a press conference Tuesday afternoon, Chief Deputy Byron Lyons said the four sexual assault charges involve two female victims ranging in age from the teens to the early 20s. In addition, the child endangerment charge stems from the fact that Hamilton allegedly sexually assaulted one of the victims in the presence of the woman's 1-year-old relative, Lyons said.
Officials say the first report of assault was back in 2008.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office received a sexual assault and endangering a child complaint about Hamilton on Sept. 8, according to a press release. During the investigation, more people came forward with sexual assault complaints against Hamilton, the story said.
"Due to the potential for multiple victims and because of the suspect's status as a Peace Officer, the Sheriff's Office requested the assistance of the Texas Rangers to assist in the investigation," the press release stated.
Before he started working for the Sweeney ISD Police Department, Hamilton also worked for the Polk County Sheriff's Office in the late 80's, the Patton Village Police Department, the Cleveland Police Department, the Texas Southern University Police Department, the Corrigan Police Department, the Onalaska Police Department, and the Trinity County Sheriff Office, the press release stated.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office is asking that anyone with any information pertaining to these cases or Hamilton should contact Childers at 936-327-6810 or Polk County Crime Stoppers at (936) 327-STOP.
