LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

The Angelina County Sheriff's Office hops to solve more theft cases by signing up for an online tracking database.

The service provided by Leadsonline.com allows for law enforcement to look up items that are registered into national databases by pawn shops and other resale locations. The service is for a one year contract for now. It will cost the department $2,462.

"If we have a serial number of a stolen item, we are able to plug it in and see if we find a match," Cpt. Alton Lenderman said. " The real advantage for us is that we cannot always drive down to Houston or Dallas or to New Orleans and check those shops for stolen property. They will pawn it there, hoping we won't follow up that far. "

Lenderman said the online database will cut down a significant amount of investigation time for the department

"If someone said I pawned it in Houston, we would have to stop through every town between here and Houston," Lenderman said. "That takes a lot of time. We wouldn't be able to hit them all."

Lenderman said it is easy for residents to become victims of crime, so it is important to take steps to ensure your property can be returned safely.

"Anything that has a model number or serial number, you want that," Lenderman said. "On jewelry and stuff; picture it and photograph it real good. Put some type of identifying mark that you can identify if you need to."
