LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Inspections for on-site sewage systems in Angelina County will soon be done by another entity.
During the regular commissioner's court meeting, the county agreed to give up their right to be the delegated authority over the program. The county will be giving control over to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Judge Wes Suiter said it is his belief that the Angelina Neches River Authority would be taking over the job of inspecting the systems.
"We used the Angelina County and Cities Health District," Suiter said. "The inspectors made a career move, so we had to make a choice. We had two options. We could either relinquish to TCEQ and let them find another agency to delegate it to or create a new agency."
Cost for consumers was a concern at the meeting. Suiter told those in attendance from what he understood, consumers would now be responsible for a one time fee compared to multiple charges the health department would charge.
The Angelina Neches River Authority will be discussing the possible change at an open meeting at 10 a.m. of Sept. 25. The meeting will take place at the Angelina/Lufkin Chamber of Commerce.
