LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Two of Deep East Texas' most talked about teams go head-to-head Friday night. The Lufkin Panthers and Nacogdoches Dragons fans are geared up to see who walks away with winning bragging rights.
"Legend said this is the oldest football game rivalry in Texas history," said Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown.
For the first time since 1930 the Dragons have won back-to-back games.
"We're talking about a very long rivalry between Lufkin and Nacogdoches," Alan Fitch, Spirit Customs apparel Owner said. "It's been going on for years and years."
Fans from both sides believe they'll be the ones to come out with the win.
"V-i-c-t-o-r-y, victory is ours, we have claimed it," Phyllis Hunt, Lufkin Panthers fan said.
"I'd love for them to keep the winning streak up," Tim Muyers, a Nacogdoches Dragons fan said.
It's been two years since the Lufkin Panthers took home the win. Friday night, Panthers supporters said they believe there is something that will set them apart.
"We've gone to Nacogdoches for the last three years and so we're on our own turf this year and we're excited," Diane Mcclain, Lufkin AAA Owner said. "When they look up and see the sea of purple, and the shirts saying straight out of Lufkin, they're ready."
"Nacogdoches had a few bragging rights recently and it's time to take all of that back," Brown said.
Home advantage is something that Dragon fans say they're not really worried about.
"Playing at home is a small advantage, but I think Bobby Rays as the coach will have them ready for this game," Fitch said. "You know we've beaten them the last two games, and we hope for a three peat."
As Dragons fans made their way to Lufkin, "the Dragons are coming so get ready," Fitch said.
And the Panthers fired back.
"You just be ready, we are coming," Hunt said. "We're coming for you because guess what? This year belongs to the panthers. This is a panther nation."
"We do want you to come over here and shop here in Lufkin but don't bet us in football," Brown said.
