LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Lufkin veterans came together to honor a man they called a true hero.
John powers, one of the last Iwo Jima survivors in Texas, was honored with a cookout at the military veteran peer network Tuesday by some of his fellow fighters.
"He is a living history lesson, to have him and honor him is a great honor." Burke Veterans Coordinator Jeff Headrick said.
Powers was a Marine Sniper during the battle, and said that he is the youngest of the Texas survivors from the battle. Powers said he lied about his age when he first joined.
Powers will be featured on KTRE Wednesday night at 10 p.m. as part of the 'Survivors' series.
