LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

It’s a celebration 100 years in the making for this self-proclaimed princess of the day.

“Now you’re going to find out what my age aren’t you,” said Elma Lee Lawrence, who celebrates her 100th birthday today.

Energetic and witty; Elma Lee Lawrence celebrates this 100th birthday and although it’s a special day.

“I don’t feel like I’m as old as I am,” Lawrence said.

An East Texan at heart, born in Apple Springs, TX.

The two were married for 62 years before Tracy’s death in 2012. And as for that Houston connection? The two have strong ties to Houston Baptist University.

“We gave a good amount of money to get it going in the beginning,” Lawrence said.

$30 million to be exact; In 2008, the university named Lawrence Park in the couple’s honor.

Lawrence has kept busy with her long-time book club. And as for how they feel to be celebrating her milestone?

“She looks like she’s 20 years younger than 2 years ago. I need to know what kind of makeup she’s putting on her face,” said Linda Smelley, Lufkin Literacy Club.

For the ladies, who often delight in a good read together, seeing Lawrence’s energy gives them hope.

“When you get in your seventies and eighties, I don’t know about you girls, but everything starts hurting and there’s a new wrinkle everyday,” Smelley said.

So what exactly is Lawrence’s secret?

“Gee, I don’t know how to answer it,” Lawrence said.

An answer we may never know.
