LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Over 800 women and men showed up to remember and honor those who are fighting breast cancer at the annual Power of Pink Luncheon.
The event has been going on for 22 straight years and is put on by CHI St.Luke's Health Memorial Hospital. The event is used as a way to remember those who have died from breast cancer and celebrate those who have won the battle.
"We planned for 800, and we completely sold it out this year," Lindsay Mott said. "We had bumped it up to 800 a couple of years ago, and we actually have a little more than 800 this year."
The event was highlighted by honoring the original founders of the event who came up with the idea after having a paper sack lunch at the hospital one day. The event has grown to feature speakers and videos as well as fun moments.
"It's a great thing for the community," Mott said. "It shows a lot of support for breast cancer awareness and breast cancer survivors and the memory of those that we lost."
The favorite part of the event for many is the annual Art Bra Competition that features decorated bras by community members. This year's winner was a beach-themed bra featuring a flamingo on the bra.
"Breast cancer is such a serious subject, and we don't want to make light of it," Mott said."We want ladies to come and remember those that we lost and honor those that have been through breast cancer or are going through it now. The art bras are just a fun way to spread awareness."
