From the Lufkin Pro Day Group
The Lufkin Pro Day Group is preparing once again to honor three outstanding individuals in the sports field from Angelina County.
Honored this year will be Diboll Lumberjack, University of Texas and Green Bay Packers tight end, Jermichael Finley. Youth baseball coach and trainer, Bud Maddux, coach and teacher at Dunbar and Lufkin High schools, the late Oscar Kennedy, Sr.
Jermichael Finley participated in multiple sports at Diboll which included football, basketball and track. He was heavily recruited by several Division I schools and chose the University of Texas. After an outstanding college career as a tight end for the Longhorns, he was drafted in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft (91st pick overall) by the Green Bay Packers and played six years in the NFL with 223 receptions for over 2700 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Bud Maddux graduated from Lufkin High School and attended college at North Texas and Victoria. With his love for baseball, Bud began coaching in 1974 in the Lufkin Youth Baseball program. Winning his first World Series in 1977, he has been at the helm of 10 champion World Series Teams. Bud still coaches a 12-year old select team, today. He opened the Bud Maddux Baseball/Softball Academy in Lufkin in 2010 where he trains up to 100 students a month.
The late Oscar Kennedy, Sr. graduated from Wiley College where he played and lettered in football. He began his 49-year teaching career in 1950. He taught and coached at Dunbar and Lufkin High schools. As a coach and educator, Oscar Kennedy offered significant and enduring contributions to the thousands of students and athletes he taught; the number of students that graduated and attended college; number of athletes who played sports in college; and the number of athletes who played in the NFL. He was truly an inspiration to all.
