Mary Jo Gorden, Lufkin community leader, dies at the age of 68

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Mary Jo Gorden, a community leader and the wife of former Lufkin mayor Jack Gorden Jr., died Wednesday at the age of 68.

Services for Mary Jo Gorden are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of the Christ Congregational Church, which is located at 105 Saddle Creek Drive. The Rev. Randall W. Green will officiate the funeral.

Mary Jo Gorden was born June 27, 1947 in Lufkin to the late jack Otto and Cynthia McMullen, according her Carroway Funeral Home obituary. She was a sixth-generation Lufkinite.

"She was a charter member of Christ Congregational Church," the obituary stated. "She demonstrated her zest for life and desire to serve by being an important part of Buckner Family Center, The Mosaic Center, Downtown Arts Center, Angelina County Historical Center and other organizations.

Mary Jo Gorden was also the chairwoman of the Angelina County Historical Commission, and she taught childhood development at Angelina College. In addition, the day care center at Buckner Family Place is named in her honor.

In December of 2009 Mary Jo Gorden joined forces with the Red Cross to host a clothing/household items drive for victims of a violent storm that blew through Lufkin that year.

Instead of flowers, people may make memorial contributions to the Christ Congregational Church at P.O. Box 27, Lufkin, Texas 75902 or Hospice in the Pines 1504 W. Avenue, Lufkin Texas 75904.
