LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Volunteers with the Angelina County United Way Friday gathered in front of the donation sign in front of the Lufkin Mall to celebrate meeting and exceeding their fundraising goal of $390,000.
During the 2015 fundraising campaign, the United Way of Angelina County raised $435,570. Of that total GE was the biggest donor. The company's employees raised $88.000.
"They gave us a figure, and two days later, the foundry closed," campaign chairman Melissa Chumley said. "We were a little anxious about that because the management and employees came through with their donations, and they surpassed where they told us they would be."
A week ago, the Angelina County United Way was at 75 percent of its goal.
"It's always been a tradition for us," said General Electric Human Resource Coordinator Doug Holland. "We know the economy right now with oil and gas is not good, but always, the employees and company have reached into their pockets."
The money raised in the campaign will be split among 19 different charities in Angelina County.
