NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - At this hour at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, several hundred people are gathering for an interdenominational community Thanksgiving service. In about an hour, a meal will follow.
Earlier Monday, more than 50 roasted turkeys were sliced up to serve all who attend.
The servers are pastors of the Nacogdoches Ministerial Alliance, while each of their churches donated several cooked turkeys. Sacred Heart volunteers prepare all the side dishes.
The event has become a longstanding tradition in Nacogdoches. About 200 shut-ins are served too.
"They use the Meals on Wheels list and add any of the churches' names that aren't added to it," said Gary Giese, a deacon with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. "And we deliver those and it takes about two hours for the delivery to be completed."
There will even be enough turkey and fixings to serve the inmates at the Nacogdoches County Jail.
