LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Explaining that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure," the Angelina College president announced that the school will start up a new police department.
Speaking at the Chamber of Commerce First Friday luncheon, Dr. Michael Simon said a budget for the department was approved at the November board meeting.
Simon said the plan is to start off by hiring one officer, who would serve as a chief of the department, with the department to slowly grow over the next year or so.
"We've been having off-duty sheriff's deputies on the campus during the evening," Simon said. "Then this past semester, we started having one during the day. We will keep a good relationship with the county and work them into our security."
Simon said they hope to have a chief hired as soon as possible after the beginning of the year.
"We're wanting students to see that they're there for them and their safety," Simon said.
