NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Friends of NISD, a grassroots group that was so active during the recent school bond issue, doesn't want its momentum to die along with the bond issue.

Members are striving to remain active in ways that do not involve politics.

Friends of NISD is vocal about each major change or proposal in the district. Member Heather Olson Beal knows with each bond issue ....

"We kinda had a flurry of activity,” said Heather Olson Beal, a Friends of NISD member

Then once the issue goes away, particularly with a defeat ...

"We really didn't do much,” Beal said.

Members don't want that to happen again, so through social media the Friends of NISD plan to remain active and in the long run unify the community following a volatile bond issue.

"There needs to be a reconciliation,” said Chay Rees Runnels, a Friends of NISD member. “There needs to be healing across both groups. I think those people who are passionate about the schools are going to do that and we can put aside differences and move forward."

It all begins with a Christmas service project called, Friends of NISD Classroom Supply Drive.

"It's not about NISD administration. It's not about school buildings, old ones, news ones,” Olson Beal said. “It's not about political parties. This is just purely an effort for us to try to say the community supports the teachers and librarians at NISD."

Instead, Friends of NISD say filling teacher wish lists is a simple but significant way of showing educators the community cares.

You can volunteer to fill specific educator wish lists by going to the Friends of NISD Facebook page. Soon lists of needs will be posted on the same site.

In addition classroom, library, or counseling donations can be dropped off at the NISD Support Center on South Shawnee.
