NACOGDOCHES, TX (Press Release)- Stephen F. Austin has announced its 2016 football schedule, released today by the SFA Athletic Department. The 11-game schedule features five home games at Homer Bryce Stadium, as well as the renewal of the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston and another non-conference tilt against a Big 12 foe.
The 90th season of Lumberjack football kicks off Saturday, September 3rd, when SFA makes the trip to Lubbock to face Texas Tech. It will be the fourth-straight season the ‘Jacks will face a Big 12 opponent and fifth time in the last six seasons (Texas A&M was a member of the Big 12 when SFA faced them in 2010), marking the third overall meeting between the Lumberjacks and Red Raiders.
SFA’s 2016 home opener, the 44th season at Homer Bryce Stadium, will take place the following week when the Lumberjacks host West Alabama on Saturday, September 10th. The Tigers are coming off a 7-4 campaign in 2015, posting a 3-4 record in the Gulf South Conference (Division II) as the game marks the first meeting between the two schools.
The Lumberjacks then get into the heart of its nine-game Southland Conference schedule, which will be a mirror of SFA’s 2015 slate. The ‘Jacks open up SLC play with quite a challenge, traveling to Lake Charles, Louisiana, for a date with reigning conference champion McNeese State on Saturday, September 17th.
Abilene Christian then visits Homer Bryce Stadium on Saturday, September 24th, which will serve as Parent’s Weekend for the 2016 season. The Lumberjacks have compiled a 21-12 record on Parent’s Day games, winning four of their last seven.
The game against the Wildcats then sets the stage for the 91st version of the Battle of the Piney Woods against rival Sam Houston State on Saturday, October 1st. The rivalry showdown will once again be staged at NRG Stadium in Houston as SFA looks to put an end to the Bearkats’ five-game winning streak.
SFA will make its second and final trip out of the state of Texas the following week, traveling to Thibodaux, Louisiana to take on Nicholls on Saturday, October 8th. That sets up a showdown with Southeastern Louisiana at Homer Bryce on Saturday, October 15th as the ‘Jacks and Lions meet for the final time until the 2019 season due to the conference schedule rotation.
Following an open date, SFA then makes its first-ever trip to the Alamo City, facing Incarnate Word in San Antonio on Saturday, October 29th to close out the month of October.
SFA then plays two of its final three games at Homer Bryce in the month of November, beginning with a date with Central Arkansas on Saturday, November 5th. The game against the Bears will serve as the Lumberjacks’ 2016 Homecoming game as SFA looks to improve on its 40-35-1 record on Homecoming.
The final road game of the season means a second trip to Houston as SFA faces Houston Baptist on Saturday, November 12th. That sets up the Battle for Chief Caddo as the Lumberjacks host Northwestern State on Saturday, November 19th, looking to reclaim the Chief from their border rivals.
Kickoff times against West Alabama and Abilene Christian are scheduled for 6 p.m. with the remaining three home games scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. Game times for road contests will be announced as SFA’s opponents release their 2016 schedules. Season tickets will go on sale in the early spring when the Lumberjacks begin spring practices.
