LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Former Angelina County court-at-law judge Joe Martin has announced he will run for district attorney.
In a press release issued Wednesday, Martin said his decision came after requests from several members of the criminal justice community.
"After much consideration and reflection I agreed to run," he said. "I believe I have an obligation to answer when called. We have tremendous judges and law enforcement agencies in Angelina County. Working with them I believe I can move the district attorney's office in a positive direction."
Martin was elected county-court-at-law judge in 1986 and served that position for 12 years. In 2007, he joined the staff of the Polk County District Attorney and served there for eight years.
"Crime in Angelina County has changed tremendously since I began my career," Martin said. "Angelina County needs a district attorney that will aggressively and efficiently meet that challenge."
Former Angelina County Assistant District Attorney Layne Thompson has signed on to be Martin's campaign treasurer.
Martin said he will enter the Republican primary.
No candidates have officially signed up for the position in the primary. Current District Attorney Art Bauereiss had not immediately returned an email inquiring about his intentions to run for another term.
