DPS releases names involved in Sabine Co. log truck fatality

SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

A person has died after a log from a log truck hit their pickup on State Highway 87 in Sabine County Friday afternoon.

According to the DPS report, Jerome Hanks, 42 of Bon Wier, was driving a 1994 Peterbilt log truck and traveling north after noon on SH 87 in a right-hand curve at an unsafe speed when they turned over and lost the load of logs. The logs then struck a 1999 Chevy pickup.

Genaro Madera, 52 from Lufkin died on the scene. According to DPS, J Fidel Silva Reyes, 45 from Lufkin was taken to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and was last listed in serious condition. Hanks was taken to Christus Memorial Hospital in Jasper and is in critical condition. Manven Ortega, 47 from Lufkin, was a passenger of the Chevy pickup. DPS said Ortega was treated and released at the scene.

Both lanes 10 miles south of Hemphill were closed until the logs can be cleared.
