Angelina Co. Sheriff looking at adding safe zone for online shopping exchanges

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said he is looking at adding a safe zone at his department building that could be used by people  handling transactions of online sales.

The sales have become popular in East Texas with customers using Facebook groups with Deep East Texas Classifieds being the most popular.

"I had thought of the idea for a while and then I had a friend come to me with the idea again a few days ago so I started thinking about it again," Sanches said. "Safety is the number one goal. It is having that resource available for the public. We're looking at having a spot here on the sheriff office property that is safe and being recorded."

Sanches said the implementation of the safe zone will take a little more time but said people are welcomed to use the parking lot which is monitored by security cameras.Robert Hinshaw was the person that brought the idea up to the sheriff. Hinshaw uses Deep East Texas Classifieds and said the holiday season is always a time that worries him.

"Especially around the holidays I like to go to a well lighted are, a public place," Hinshaw said. "I make my presence known."

Anthony Edwards feels the same way.

"I like to be in a safe area," Edwards said. " I like to know where I am going and if I am being watched. I hate to go somewhere and feel unsafe."

Matt Davis runs Deep East Texas Classifieds and brought up the idea on a recent post about having a safe place. Davis was excited to see Sanches step up with a plan for a safe zone.

"It will cut down on the amount of stolen goods because a would be criminal is less likely to meet at the sheriff's office," Davis said.

Sanches said he is working with the county's IT department and a person who said they are willing to donate equipment to make the idea work. Sanches said the donation would have to go through the Commissioners Court but he is confident it would work.
