LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - Ninety-Four year old Leon Berryhill was given a special celebration by the Veteran's pier Network on Thursday afternoon.
Berryhill was in the army and was on a navy ship in route to Iwo Jim when it was attacked by the Japanese Navy. A torpedo hit his ship and he had to abandon the ship. Berryhill suffered a major facial injury and ended up losing sight in his right eye.
Berryhill was given ride in a limo and then had a special pizza lunch with other veterans.
"This is one of the most special moments I have had in my lifetime and I want to thank the VA for doing this for me," Berryhill said.
The event was part of a new services the office is doing to honor veterans.
